Stephen 19:35 Location: Phone Model: | Summary - All recent BlackBerry phones (eg 8500, 8900, 9000, 9105, 9300, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800 series) should work fine with TMJ, which can also be downloaded direct from BlackBerry AppWorld in most countries. - I have had occasional reports of some difficulties using the internal GPS on some providers phones in the USA, which is suspected to be due to the providers blocking the GPS from third-party applications (though I'm not 100% sure of this - its difficult to test from the UK!). Solution may be to untick GPS/Options/Allow Costs to disable the 'Assisted' GPS (which uses the internet to download initial satellite data), resulting in a slower initial fix, but better reliability. - In theory any BlackBerry running software platform v4.2.1 and above should work, although older models (eg 8100, 8300, 8800 series) may suffer from very slow screen updates. - Touchscreen BlackBerrys (9500 Storm, 9530 Storm2, 9800 Torch) should work fine - see user guide info on touchscreen phones for more info. - See BlackBerry-specific notes for further info | |

Some BlackBerry firmware versions have introduced odd bugs/issues, though the current OS v5.0.0.681 seems quite stable. The TMJ 'Lock Keypad' function no longer works (was fine in previous firmware - BB bug??) so use the phones dedicated Lock key for this instead. The screen on the 8900 is particularly good - it's not especially large but the high resolution and bright backlight help the maps look very crisp and it works well outdoors in sunlight. Fine control of map panning with the Trackball can be slightly tricky, however the I,M,J,L and M keys are also mapped to Up,Down,Left,Right and Fire actions so can give more precise control when necessary. If prompted after installation, ensure that TMJ is set as a 'Trusted' app, or set all the BlackBerry/Options/Applications/TMJ-Mobile/Permissions options to 'Allow' to get rid of all security warning prompts. The internal GPS gives a reasonable location and with the 'Assisted' option enabled it is usually quick to achieve an initial fix. However where satellite reception is poorer the recorded track often results in a spiky or saw-tooth effect. Definitely recommend an external bluetooth GPS device for any serious use, especially for OSM mapping. (Same applies to all phones though!) | |

Occasionally a location is picked up but this is either done by mobile web or phone signal triangulation, and is nowhere near accurate. However, I purchased a bluetooth GPS receiver which was quite cheap. The TMJ software works fine and the signal is extremely accurate. | |
