Apart from adding the slightly obvious Donate button I have also finally updated the TMJ-Mobile Map Library and have also added further OpenStreetMap-based maps. The previous ones had been up for almost a year, and were becoming very out-of-date. Due to the way that OpenStreetMap works the maps are continually improving - the difference is clear between last years map of London and the current one:

I'll try to update the maps more frequently - once every 3-4 months or so should be sufficient. If there are more cities that you would like to see then please reply to this thread and I'll try and add them into the update cycle. (Check on OpenStreetMap first to see whether the area has much coverage worth using).

Hi,

I take it people should only add maps that are 'public domain', so from sources like 'OpenStreetMap'
I've created a few maps from Google and the OS website, but I guess putting them onto a site such as yours would be breaking copyright rules??

Chris.

@ChrisM
of course.

@Stephen
the osm are nicely vector data, and there are vector based map solutions for mobiles, like http://gpsmid.sourceforge.net/. are there any plans to integrate this for osm data?

regards,

alexander

Hi Guys,

Chris, yeah thats about the size of it, OSM is the *only* comprehensive map data source that is totally free for anyone to use - all other maps have horrible copyright restrictions, hence why I'm more and more focusing on OSM. Its annoying for those who live in places that aren't yet covered, but the project has only been running for 4 years after all!

Alexander, yes actually I do have something along these lines on the way. It'll be web-based (initially at least) so the phone will need internet access to download the maps (but fortunately they're relatively compact in size). Its taken longer than I had expected to get it ready, but I'll hopefully get some screenshots up in the coming weeks...

Cheers,
Stephen
