Hi Stephen

I would just like to say thanks for such a great piece of software, great for cycle navigation and works brilliantly on my C905. Just need to find a decent handlebar mount (currently using a universal mobile holder with a quick release bike light mounting bracket attached).
Just one question, when I create a pre-defined route with say bikeroutetouster and download the gpx file from TMJ to my mobile, is there any way to get the route to strictly follow the road without having to create masses of waypoints?

Thanks Again

Myles

Hi Myles

If you use GPSBabel (http://www.gpsbabel.org/ - it's free) to convert your GPX file to an OZI file you can then use the Main Menu->File->Import Route from OZI file option. This wont reduce the waypoints in the same way that downloading a route from the TMJ site does - I've found this extremely good for long routes (up to 100 miles)

Hi Myles,

Am I right that you're uploading the GPX file to the website and then using the Web/Download Route function on the phone? Currently when the route is being downloaded to the phone, the website filters it to try to minimise the number of routepoints stored on the phone. It was originally intending for downloading previous tracks back to the phone, which often have hundreds of trackpoints, and I figured that it wouldn't be necessary for the route to be so detailed as the original track. However I can see in your case though why this may not be the best option!

How many points do you have in the routes on the website? I'll maybe add an option on the phone to disabled the filtering and download all the points, although I wouldn't recommend this if the route has more than a few hundred points, as it may slow TMJ down a fair bit...

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen and Paul

Thanks for your responses.

Yes Stephen you are right, uploading to TMJ website and then web/download function. Checking my route folder, one route (47miles) has 1083 points in it (way too many I hear you scream!!). Paul, used GPSBabel and converted file to OZI, worked a treat, displays correctly. Just need to test it out whilst out cycling and see if it slows things down!!

Its great because it means I can pre-plan a route I've never cycled before and don't have to worry about getting lost.

Cheers

Hi Paul

Do you use your C905 for cycle navigation?

If you do, how do you find the runtime of the battery? With the screen brightness turned down I find I get 2.5 - 3 hrs runtime.
I was going to install maps on the memory card and run the phone in flight mode to try to increase the battery life but I don't think the GPS works in flight mode.

Cheers

Hi Myles

This is one of the perennial questions. I get about 3 hours just like you, but I also tend to have it updating my position to the web. I have the screen go off and only activate it if I want to check my route etc. There is a backlight on/off function - there was some talk in earlier threads about having this added to the shortcut keys.

I've done some experimenting with battery life as I'll be using the phone for tracking/navigation a lot later in the summer for day long rides. In the end I bought a PowerMonkey (Google it) which I use to charge the battery when it runs really low. It will charge the phone 2½ times before it goes flat itself, so runs for around 9 hours.

Comments that others have made in other threads about using an external GPS device also proved correct, though this was less convenient - more to keep charged but worth considering.

You should definitely put the maps on the memory card - what if you are out of coverage and can't download the map from the web?
