Hello,
I was looking for some app, which could grab all sentences from my GPS, save them to log (lets say every timeperiod) and later I would parse log with a program I would write and plot graph to see profile, trail etc ... but I found this app :) I decided to try it.
BUT:
I have a problem with starting the application on HTC TyTN II (WM 6 + Java + internal GPS sensorf). I installed version "With JSR-179 Internal GPS: [JAD] [JAR]". Installation was complete without any error. After starting the application there is an error. Just white screen, It says Error and no description of what could be possibly the problem.

Well, is there anybody whou could help me what to do, try, or find out some logging that could help to solve my problem?
Or do you know about some other app what would do the job?

Thanks.
Rado

Hi Rado,

Try the 'Without JSR-82 Bluetooth API' version instead, and if it runs then you should be able to connect to the GPS via the 'GPS/Enter Manual Connection URL' option. In here you need to enter 'comm:' plus the name of the GPS communications port to connect to. The available ports are listed in Menu/About... so by trying each one it should become clear which is the correct one. (A quick google search suggests that it might be comm:COM4 but this is not definite).

Good luck!

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
I did try all of the generic versions available. Always uninstall, and then install new version. I also tried soft reset after instalation. There is always the same result. Tha app doesn't start and ends up with just white blank screen and Error sign with no message which could indicate what happened.
Is there any possibility to log what happened? And then check the log?
Or any other suggestions?

Thanks. Rado

Hi Rado,

That's annoying - I'm afraid I'm again at a loss for what to try. :-( It runs fine on my Dell Axim (Windows Mobile 2003 SE with Java J9 JVM) so I'd hoped that it would work on more recent WM phones too. I have just tried a brief search for Java issues on the TyTN II, haven't come up with much, but there was one site which suggested temporarily changing the phone's Regional Settings to English (US or UK) - might be worth a try if your phone is set to a different language! Other than that, without having a handset to experiment with its rather difficult to know what to suggest.

Sorry!

Hi Stephen,
well, this change didn't work. The result is the same. I would really like to help to solve the problem. It could be helpful for some other people. Do u think there is a chance that developers could make a debug release and I could try it and find out what is wrong?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Rado,

Unfortunately a 'debug' version wouldn't really help in this case as if its not even starting up then it wouldn't even be able to display any debug info! I can't find any information on Java development on HTCs, which is annoying. Both Sony Ericsson and Nokia provide very useful documents, tools and emulators to allow testing with and without the phone, but since HTC doesn't appear to offer any tools or advice (as far as I can find on their website), I'm at a loss for things to try. :-(

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
well, this is very confusing ... but I'll try to find out something. I work as a developer as well, that's why I ask for any developers version with some startup logging on ... if possible :) I'll have to look even more on the internet :)
Thanks for now.

Hi Stephen,
at last I tried different java. I tried IBM J9 java. It's the one you are using. And ... surprise ... everything went well and I can use the application. Very similar behaviour have some other applications, so it looks like java preinstalled in the phone is not the best one. :) I'll stay with IBM java for some time.
Thanks. Rado

Hi Rado,

Thats good to hear, still its a shame that it doesn't run in the built-in version. I found one website that said the TyTN builtin Java only supports CLDC 1.0 whereas TMJ needs CLDC 1.1 - unless the website had a typo, this might explain why it didn't work...

Glad its working anyhow!

Stephen

Radoo, or somebody
can you tell me what version of TMJ runs on the tytn II ? I've installed the IBM J9 java and can install TMJ but when i start the program it stalls with "loading preferences".
Who helps?

Hi Peter,

I'm afraid I don't think you'll have much luck running the latest version of TMJ on the TYTN II. The 'Generic Without Bluetooth' version would be the most suitable, but as Rado and yourself have found, there is some odd bug that prevents the program from getting past the loading preferences screen. I've tried in the past to find what might be causing this but without much success. The odd thing is that it works fine under the J9 JVM on my old Dell Axim, so I've assumed that its something specific to the TYTN.

Sorry!

Regards,
Stephen
